My Grandma gave me her awesome Derby Pie recipe the year I got married and not a minute before. I assume she thought my wife could do it better than I could (she can).

Grandma made it every year for Christmas but never during Derby week for some reason. It’s become part of my own family tradition as well, but we’ve extended it to Thanksgiving and Christmas. And sometimes in the summer.

Don’t be fooled by other people who claim they have the best recipe. Not that place in Kentucky that owns the trademark. Not the various places that call it “Trackside Pie” to avoid lawsuits. Not even the really good pie shop in my home town. I have tried them all and they are not the best. My Grandma’s is the best.

But, since you clicked the link, I will tell you that there is a double extra secret ingredient that’s not on the recipe. I add a shot of bourbon in the wet ingredients to give it the complete Kentucky experience. It’s fantastic.
